Make an original copy first
Before cleaning an M3U list, save an unchanged original privately and record where it came from. Work on a copy you are allowed to edit. If the source manages a remote list, local changes may disappear after the next refresh.
Note the current entry count and a few favourites. These simple reference points help reveal accidental deletion. Do not begin by sorting every text line independently: metadata and its following media reference may belong together.
Define what duplicate means
Two identical display names do not necessarily describe the same stream. They may represent regional programmes, audio languages or different formats. Compare the entry’s useful attributes and reference before deciding to remove it.
Likewise, the same media URL can appear under several category labels intentionally. Decide whether the purpose is to simplify your personal menu or to edit a source dataset. A favourites collection may solve household clutter without altering the playlist itself.

Keep related lines together
An extended entry can include descriptive metadata followed by a media location. Move or remove the entry as a unit, preserving the structure your player supports. Editing individual matching lines blindly may leave an orphaned label or attach it to the wrong video.
Use a very small test copy when learning the format. Keep entries with regional or language differences until you have compared them through permitted playback. A text match is a starting point for review, not proof that two items are interchangeable.
Test the cleaned copy separately
Import the edited list under a distinct neutral name, where the player supports multiple sources. Check its count, important entries, favourites and guide mapping. Stop playback on the original source before comparing the new one.
If something fails, restore the original rather than continuing to delete uncertain entries. Record which change caused the problem. Incremental edits take less time to diagnose than a full cleanup with no intermediate checks.
Plan what happens after refresh
If the provider refreshes the list, decide whether organisation belongs in the player instead of the source file. Check whether your app preserves favourites across updates and whether it offers documented filtering. Avoid inventing unsupported custom tags.
Keep the cleaned file private if it contains account-bearing URLs. Sharing a tidier list can still expose credentials or access you are not entitled to redistribute. Use a small anonymised example when asking for formatting help.

Frequently asked questions
Are identical channel names always duplicates?+
No. Check region, language, source and format before removing either entry.
Can I alphabetise all lines in a text editor?+
Do not sort individual lines blindly. Metadata and media references need to remain associated.
