Check the filename before its contents
When an M3U file will not import, inspect its full filename first. A document saved as list.m3u.txt may appear to be a playlist when extensions are hidden. Confirm what the player expects and save a copy with the intended extension using a plain-text editor.
Keep the original unchanged while testing. A file downloaded from a sign-in page can contain HTML rather than playlist entries even if its name ends in .m3u. Look at a private local copy to see whether it contains expected media references or a web-page error.
Keep formatting plain
Word processors may add document formatting that a playlist parser cannot use. Choose a text editor and preserve one entry per line. Avoid copying through a rich-text tool that substitutes quotation marks or inserts extra punctuation into URLs.
Extended metadata lines have their own syntax. If you are editing a list you control, change one small part at a time and test it. Do not assume every player recognises every custom attribute used in a provider example.

Treat unreadable names as an encoding clue
If entries load but accented letters display incorrectly, investigate the text encoding and the player’s documented expectations. UTF-8 is associated with .m3u8, but extension changes alone cannot repair text that has already been incorrectly decoded and saved.
Reopen the original with the appropriate encoding where your editor supports this, then save a separate test copy. Compare a small set of known names. Avoid a global replacement of unusual characters until you know whether they are part of a media path or only a display label.
Distinguish local paths from web addresses
A relative path depends on the playlist’s location; an absolute local path depends on a specific directory arrangement. Moving the playlist to a television does not transfer the referenced videos. Confirm the device can reach the actual media location.
For a URL, preserve its path, parameters and case-sensitive components. A line wrapping on screen is different from a real newline inserted into the address. Check the text file itself before changing server or player settings.
Validate with a minimal comparison
Create a separate playlist containing one known playable file you own. If it loads, compare its structure with the failing document. If neither loads, check the import method and player support before editing a large collection.
Keep account-bearing files out of public validators and shared paste sites. An apparently harmless text document may include credentials or temporary tokens. Share a redacted example with support only when needed, leaving enough structure to explain the issue without exposing access details.

Frequently asked questions
Will renaming .txt to .m3u fix every file?+
No. The contents must also be valid plain-text playlist data with accessible media references.
Can I move a playlist without its local videos?+
Only if its media paths still resolve. A playlist does not carry the referenced videos with it.
